How to Create a Bootable USB with Rufus

- Back up the USB stick. Everything on it will be erased. Use a drive of 8 GB or larger for Windows.
- Run rufus.exe. There is nothing to install. Confirm the Device box shows the USB stick you intend to use, and not another drive.
- Select your ISO with the Select button. Leave partition scheme on GPT and target system on UEFI for any machine from roughly the last decade; choose MBR and BIOS for older hardware.
- Press Start and wait. On a USB 3.0 stick a Windows ISO typically takes a few minutes. Then boot the target PC from USB, usually via F12, F2 or Del at power-on depending on the manufacturer.
